UPDATE: 10 October 2007 a pedestrian was killed walking in the roadway--the only place to walk in that location--near a Kansas City area river bridge. Like all Missouri River bridges in the area, the Broadway Bridge utterly lacks facilities for walking and bicycling, but people use it anyway because they have no choice. We need to let MoDOT know the time for talk has passed and the time for action is now.

Email Subject: *		Background We asked MoDOT to include bicycle and pedestrian accommodations as part of the plan for the new Paseo Bridge across the Missouri River. This would create the first safe bicycle/pedestrian crossing of the Missouri River in the Kansas City area. This bike/ped river crossing would integrate with both the local road network and the planned trail network. In addition, it is important to carefully plan for the needs of bicyclists and pedestrians in each of the approximately 9 cross-streets and interchanges that will be re-constructed as part of the kcIcon project. As of December 2006, after over a year of community action, support from committees, councils, and government bodies, MoDOT has (partly) agreed with these ideas--but they are taking bids and scoring project designs now, so they need to be reminded of their promise. Shouldn't bicycle and pedestrian accommodation be routine in every major bridge project--especially right in the middle of a major city? And even more so when there is no other safe bicycle/pedestrian river crossing within miles! District 4 District Engineer Message (Beth Wright): *	Dear Ms. Wright, Access for those of us who bicycle and walking is very important to me. Please help make this part of the I-29/I-35 project. Bicyclists and pedestrians need to be able to safely cross the river and also safely cross the freeway at each cross street. Also, we need to get the Heart of America project done now, within a year.
MoDOT Director Pete Rahn: *	Dear Mr. Rahn, I support making bicycling and walking access across the river and on cross-streets across the freeway an integral part of the Paseo project. There is no reason to wait until 2012 to make the Heart of America bridge bike/ped friendly. We need to get that project done now.
Paseo Project Manager Brian Kidwell: *	Mr. Kidwell, I support MoDOT's promise to make bicycle and pedestrian issues an important part of the Paseo Project guidelines and scoring. Please help us choose a design that will safely accommodate all modes of travel across the river and on streets that cross the freeway.
