UPDATE: 10 October 2007 a pedestrian was killed walking in the roadway--the only place to walk in that location--near a Kansas City area river bridge. Like all Missouri River bridges in the area, the Broadway Bridge utterly lacks facilities for walking and bicycling, but people use it anyway because they have no choice. We need to let MoDOT know the time for talk has passed and the time for action is now.

Email Subject: *		Background We asked MoDOT to include bicycle and pedestrian accommodations as part of the plan for the new Paseo Bridge across the Missouri River. This would create the first safe bicycle/pedestrian crossing of the Missouri River in the Kansas City area. This bike/ped river crossing would integrate with both the local road network and the planned trail network. In addition, it is important to carefully plan for the needs of bicyclists and pedestrians in each of the approximately 9 cross-streets and interchanges that will be re-constructed as part of the kcIcon project. As of December 2006, after over a year of community action, support from committees, councils, and government bodies, MoDOT has (partly) agreed with these ideas--but they are taking bids and scoring project designs now, so they need to be reminded of their promise. Shouldn't bicycle and pedestrian accommodation be routine in every major bridge project--especially right in the middle of a major city? And even more so when there is no other safe bicycle/pedestrian river crossing within miles! District 4 District Engineer Message (Beth Wright): *	Dear Ms. Wright, I walk and bicycle, and accommodating the needs of bicyclists and pedestrians is important to me in the KCIcon project. And we need to get the Heart of America bicycle/pedestrian retrofit done this year.
MoDOT Director Pete Rahn: *	Dear Mr. Rahn, I support MoDOT's decision to build the Paseo Bridge so that bicycle and pedestrian access can be included. Please make this an important part of the decision-making process in choosing the project design. Please include provision for safe access for people on foot and on bicycle to travel on streets that cross the kcIcon project. And retrofitting Heart of America should be a top priority. Do it now, before Paseo construction starts.
