Ask Kansas Governor Sebelius to support trails

In just a couple of minutes you can send an email message Kansas Governor Sebelius asking her to support trails in Kansas.

Recently the Kansas legislature passed HB 2432, which makes it much easier for people to file frivolous lawsuits against organizations in Kansas like the Kanza Rail-Trails Conservancy that build and maintain trails.

Unfortunately the governor recently signed this bill. However you can still write the governor to express your support for trails in Kansas--it is likely to help in the future.

Citizens have sent 144 emails on this issue--our goal is 200.

If you are in a hurry, just enter your name & email below & hit "submit" (at the bottom of the page). It should take you about a minute.

But if you have a couple of minutes, even a little personalization of the message (like one sentence) increases the impact a lot. Why do you use trails? Why are they important?

Please DO be positive, polite, and persuasive. That is what works best!

If you are from Missouri, please make some connection to Kansas (work-visit-ride in Kansas?). Bicycle tourism has been good for Missouri trails communities and turned trail opponents into supporters.

Background

According to trail advocates in Kansas, here is the situation:

Your immediate action is needed to encourage Governor Sebelius to VETO a bill on here desk, HB 2432. If she signs it, all the recent growth across Kansas by private, not-for-profit rail trail organizations will be halted as the are forced to fight frivolous lawsuits.

So far the governor seems to be hearing more from trail opponents than supporters. We need to change that situation!

The amended final version of HB 2432 has passed the Legislature and is now on the Governor's desk. The Kansas Farm Bureau was able to pull a fast maneuver and get this bill passed before it could be stopped. This unfortunate legislation may kill further development of rail-trails in Kansas.

The law authorizes trail opponents such as adjacent landowners (who would be encouraged and funded by the Kansas Farm Bureau) to file frivolous and harassing lawsuits against trail organizations. It could bankrupt trail organizations which are operating on shoestring budgets. It is unclear if the governor will veto the bill as this is an election year and she may not want to lose any votes.
