Missouri Specialty License Plate to promote Bicycling

Many bicyclists across Missouri have been interested in creating a specialty license plate with a message in support of bicycling in Missouri and safely sharing the road with bicyclists.

These plates will be similar to "share the road" plates from other states.

By filling out this form, you are indicating an interest in purchasing the plates but NOT making a definite commitment to purchase the plates. We will contact you when the plates become available.

2419 people have signed up so far. We would like to have (at least!) 4000 interested people sign up before the plates go on sale.

Background

How much will the plates cost?
The specialty license plates will cost approximately $45 per year in addition to the regular vehicle licensing fees. The majority of the extra fee will go to support the Missouri Bicycle Federation's bicycle safety activities in Missouri.

Why is it taking so long?
MoBikeFed had an application for the plates ready in June 2008. Just prior to that, however, a lawsuit brought by another group applying for a specialty plate led the Missouri Supreme Cour to strike down the specialty plate application process.

The result of that is Missouri reverted to the previous specialty plate approval process, where each specialty plate must be written into a bill and approved by the legislature.

Rep. Mike Sutherland has agreed to introduce the specialty bicycle plate bill in the Missouri General Assembly during the 2009 legislative session.

With the bill before the legislature, it is even more important for us to have signatures of support for the initiative--it's one way to show our legislators that there is signficant support for bicycling in Missouri.

When will the plates be available for purchase?
The earliest the plates can get through the complex legislative and administrative process for approval is Fall 2009 or Spring 2010. If anything goes wrong it could be delayed by a year or two.

How much does it the approval process cost?
After the legislature passes the specialty license plate legislation, MoBikeFed will need to put up $5000 to cover the initial setup fees and costs. Donations to help us cover that cost are much appreciated!

How do the plates work in other states?
Other states have had "share the road with bicycles" license plates for years.

A portion of the proceeds from the specialty license plates goes to support a bicycle advocacy organization in each of these states.

Can I help find the 2000 supporters?
