Missippi River Trail, Inc. in partnership with Delta Scenic Byways, Arkansas State University, the Jonesboro Parks and Recreation Department, and area ride coalitions will be hosting a new 310-mile adventure ride along Crowley's Ridge National Scenic Byway, April 12th - 17th to "scout the route" connecting Cape Girardeau, MO with Helena, AR for inclusion as part of the Mississippi River Trail.
Crowley's Ridge is named for Benjamin Crowley, the first European settler in the region (1820). It is the most prominent feature in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain between Cape Girardeau, Missouri and the Gulf of Mexico. Rising 250 - 550 feet above the delta flatland, the Ridge is composed of wind-blown loess and is believed to have originally been an island between the Missippi River and Ohio River that became a long low hilly ridge after the rivers changed course millions of years ago. Additional uplift created by the New Madrid Seismic Fault is also considered part of the Ridge's unique geologic history.
Most of the key historic sites and towns in the Arkansas Delta are located along Crowley's Ridge. Unique geologic formations, documented Arkansas history sites, some of the best birding in North America, good food and great hospitality are all part of this home-style countryside.
