Send KDOT a message thanking them for supporting bike/ped access on river bridges

UPDATE 10 APRIL 2006: Thanks in large part to your feedback to KDOT, The KC River Crossings Task Force unanimously approved the River Crossings policy today. MoDOT and KDOT also supported the policy after several changes were made at their request.

The next step is for the policy to be approved by MARC's Total Transportation Policy Committee and after that it will be the region's approved policy.

In the meanwhile it is still appropriate to send KDOT a message of thanks for sticking with the process and working with bike/ped advocates and community leaders, and also encouraging them to fully embrace the policy.

The next step is to encourage MoDOT to provide bicycle/pedestrian access across the Missouri River as part of their next planned bridge. Please take a moment to do that here.

In just a couple of minutes you can send an email message asking the Kansas Department of Transportation to support a more bicycle and pedestrian friendly Kansas.

If you are in a hurry, just enter your name & email below & hit "submit". It should take you about a minute.

But if you have a couple of minutes, even a little personalization of the message (like one sentence) increases the impact a lot.

It helps a lot if you point out your connection to Kansas (or Kansas City). Do you live, work, ride, walk, run, drive, pay taxes, etc., in Kansas or the KC metro area?

Please DO be positive, polite, and persuasive. That is what works best!

Right now, KDOT has stuck with the process and offered some constructive suggestions, which is far more than they have ever done before. So a word of thanks and encouragement may help a lot.

Background

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has reservations about a proposed new policy to make bicycle and pedestrian accommodation the norm on new and reconstructed bridges over the Missouri and Kansas Rivers within the KC metro area.

KDOT is not sure the public supports bicycle and pedestrian accommodations. They are not sure the bicycle and pedestrian facilities will receive enough use to justify their cost.

They need to hear from many citizens - hundreds - persuading them in a positive way that bicycle and pedestrian accommodation on bridges over major rivers in the Kansas City area is needed and will be used.

If approved this new policy will have ramifications not just in the Kansas City area but across Kansas and in fact the entire region.
