Workshop can help your city count bike/ped traffic
Accurate counts of bike/ped traffic are essential for advocating and planning new facilities. The Missouri Bicycle & Pedestrian Federation encourages all cities to conduct regular counts, and an upcoming workshop in Kansas City provides a great opportunity for your city get some training in this area.
The workshop is geared towards professionals in city planning, public works, parks and recreation, traffic engineering, etc. You can also ask your local elected officials to make sure your city is counting bicycle and pedestrian traffic. The data is often used to plan where to put new facilities, and before/after data is used to measure the facilities' use.
This type of data is increasingly required for competitive grant funding from federal and state agencies, so good bike/ped data collection helps your community compete for funding. And MoBikeFed is happy to help cities recruit volunteers.
Join us Tuesday, August 31 for a free By the Numbers workshop to learn a standardized counting technique for measuring bicycle and pedestrian activity. This workshop focuses on the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project method, co-sponsored by Alta Planning and Design and the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Pedestrian and Bicycle Council. You will learn the importance of using consistent counting methods and understand how to:
- Organize a bicycle and pedestrian count.
- Conduct the count.
- Manage and use collected data.
Who should attend:
Planners, engineers and other staff who are likely to conduct counts and surveys at the local or county levels, including jurisdictions that may apply for future federal funding.Where: Mid-America Regional Council, 600 Broadway, Kansas City MO 64105
When: 8:30-11:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 31, 2010
