Mission

The Missouri Bicycle and Pedestrian Federation is a statewide membership organization that supports and protects the rights and interests of bicyclists and pedestrians in Missouri. We make Missouri a better, safer place for bicycling, walking, and trails by championing safety, a world-class statewide network, and a strong, unified statewide movement that encourages more Missourians to bike and walk more often.

MoBikeFed's Vision of Bicycling and Walking in Missouri summarizes our 5- to 10-year plan and goals for Missouri. A few key goals:

• Obtain funding to meet goals.
   
• Coordinate efforts among constituents and related groups across Missouri.
   
• Communicate and coordinate with other state groups and national groups.
   
• Educate the public on benefits of our sports: health, social and environmental.
   
• Lobby for legislative issues on behalf of bicyclists, pedestrians, runners, and trail users.
   
• Promote safety: sharing the road and following the rules of the road.
   
• Establish bicycling, walking, and running as recognized forms of transportation, as well as recreation.
   
• Facilitate use of local, state and federal funds to meet goals.
   
• Disseminate information about progress and issues in bicycling, walking, and trails.
   
• Disseminate information about constituents' major events in the state.
   
• Help build a movement in support of bicycling and walking in Missouri.
   
• Promote the League of American Bicyclists Bicycle Friendly Community program across Missouri.
   
• Encourage Complete Streets policies at local, metropolitan, statewide, and national levels.
   
• Promote creation and improvement of a statewide bicycle route system and statewide trail systems.
   
• Promote and encourage more bicycling and walking in Missouri through programs like Bike Month, Bike to Work Week, and Walk/Bike to School Month.

Accomplishments

Our Annual Reports summarize progress and accomplishments each year, and our Legislative Platform Accomplished page tallies major legislative accomplishments.

Here are just a few highlights from our history of more than twenty years of statewide advocacy:

• Wrote and passed legislation that repealed the mandatory sidepath law in 1995 and defeated its reinstatement in 1998.
   
• Worked with legislators to improve wording and intent of bike-specific laws. Thanks to this, Missouri traffic laws rate better for bicycle friendliness than those in most other states (though work remains to be done in Missouri and in all other states).
   
• Defeated a bill that would have required all bicyclists to ride on the left side of the road, facing traffic.
   
• Defeated legislation that would have required bicyclists to ride single file.
   
• Worked with the MoDOT to change its policy on shoulder rumble strips to allow bicyclists some smooth shoulder.
   
• Worked with Amtrak in 1997 to allow unboxed bicycles to be rolled aboard.
   
• Worked with legislators to pass as "Safe Passing Law", bicycle-friendly bicycle lane provisions, and numerous other improvements to the state bicycle legislation in 2005.
   
• Defeated several attempts to ban bicyclists from Missouri roads and highways in the late 2000s and early 2010s.
   
• Worked for creation of a Bicycle Missouri license plate for automobiles, first distributed in 2013.
   
• Worked with MoDOT to redefine its priorities and plans to far better integrate bicycling and walking, 1994 through the present.
   
• Worked to support a statewide Complete Streets resolution and policy in Missouri and to support city, county, and regional Complete Streets policies across the state, mid 2000s through present.
   
• Worked to support statewide bicycle routes and bicycle tourism.
   
• Worked to support creation of a statewide trails vision and and interconnected statewide and multi-state trails system.
   
• Worked to create sample legislation, recommendations, and policies that can be adopted by cities, counties, and transportation planning commissions across Missouri.
   
• Worked for the passage of over 44 items on our Legislative Platform since 1994.
