Pave 4 miles of Co Rd 400/340 near Nodaway OR create paved bicycle trail along adjoining RR tracks (Lewis & Clark Trail) (01NAT0007)

Status:

City: Nodaway.    Route: Hwy T/Co Rd 400/340    Location: About 3.9 miles west of Nodaway through Monkey Mountain Conservation Area

Type:

Description:
Pave 3.9 miles of Co Rd 400/340 just west of Nodaway (possibly adding it to the MoDOT system to connect two disconnected sections of Hwy T) OR pave a trail along an adjoining RR right of way.

Importance:
The national Lewis & Clark bicycle route crossing into Kansas and Nebraska for approximately 100 miles from Atchison to Nebraska City. The section through Missouri is more scenic and would take bicycle tourists through St Joseph, Nodaway, Monkey Mountain Conservation Area, Rock Port, and others in the area. It will also avoid two difficult river crossings for bicycle tourists, both of which are on long, narrow bridges with no shoulder. Paving or creating a trail through this single 3.9 mile section is the only remaining barrier to making this change in the route to keep it in Missouri. Adventure Cycling has indicated a willingness to revisit this route if this change is made.
