Widen shoulders on 63 near Moberly (02KIR1005)

Status:

City: Moberly.    Route: Hwy 63 near Moberly    Location: for about 600 feet on each side of the road, just north of the northern ramps of EE/63, from the ramps to the railroad bridge and across the bridge.

Type: Shoulder

Description:
Shoulder wide enough for Amish carriage or a bicycle near exit for Rte EE. Widen shoulder between bridge and EE on/offramp by 2-4 feet. Reconfigure lanes on the bridge by re-drawing lane markings to narrow the center shoulder and widen the outside shoulder by 2-3 feet. Also may install "Share the Road" with buggies sign to alert drivers that buggies may be in the roadway on this short section where shoulders are narrower than elsewhere. From the Columbia Tribune: "Palmatory said the accident occurred just past a bridge where the highway rises above railroad tracks. The road there has little or no shoulder where a carriage could stay off the main roadway, and the slope affects visibility."

Importance:
http://www.columbiatribune.com/news/2010/jan/12/buggy-driver-killed-highway-crash/ Amish buggy driver was killed at this location. The Amish community nearby uses this road, traffic is 70 mph. Because of the slope and lack of shoulder it is a death trap for anyone using the road traveling at slower speeds. It's just a short stretch that needs a shoulder.

Obstacles:
Bridge constrains width, however there is a fairly wide inside shoulder that can be narrowed while still maintaining miniimum shy distance for the inside lane.
