Sidewalk through south Macon (02KIR1007)

Status:

City: Macon.    Route: Hwy 63    Location: From Vine St south to YMCA entrance, about 1.2 miles

Type: Sidewalk

Description:
Sidewalks along Highway 63 in Macon south of Vine St, past Macon businesses and connecting to the YMCA. This will extend existing sidewalks through town from Vine St north. The center turn line on the RR bridge just south of Vine St can be removed and the bridge reconfigured to carry the sidewalks on each side, at very low cost. As first step, just reconfigure the bridge. The rest of the length is at least minimally accessible to pedestrians by walking in the grass. But to cross the RR bridge pedestrians will have to walk directly in the lane.

Importance:
Every time I drive through Macon I cringe because there are businesses lining Hwy 63 but no sidewalks. There are tracks in the grass next to the highway where people are obviously walking. I know sidewalks are expensive, but even just doing a small section now, and extending it later, would be a big help. Will connect to the YMCA. This is the only/logical route to Middle School for students living south of Vine St, particular those on the eastern part of town.
