Missouri High Priority Bike/Ped/ADA Projects

Widen/complete shoulders on Hwy 100, I-44 interchange to OO (Route 66 bicycle route). Worst part is about the first 1-2 miles northeast of Gray's Summit, so if shoulder could be improved in this section it would help a lot. (06NAT0011)

Status:

City: Gray Summit.    Route: Hwy 100    Location: 5.7 miles from I-44 interchange to Hwy OO intersection

Type: Shoulders

Description:
Widen or add shoulders to Hwy 100 between I-44 and Hwy OO. Some portions have shoulders, some have narrow shoulders, and some have no shoulders. Upgrade the entire stretch to have minimum 4-5 foot shoulders. As bicycle use in this area is high and it is on a national bicycle route, rumble strips should be omitted, especially on any shoulders less than 4 feet wide. If rumble strips are added to shoulders less than 4 feet wide the shoulder becomes unusable for bicycling. In some places, right-of-way or other factors may preclude optimum width shoulders. Make the best of what width there is available as every foot or even six inches of additional width helps make the area safer for bicycling.

Importance:
Hwy 100 is the Route 66 route through the St Louis metro area. Most of the Hwy 100 Route has sufficient shoulders, but this section near the western part of the metro area has inconsistent shoulders. This section has traffic counts of 6000-10,000ADT, far too high for comfort between bicyclists & motorists on a two-lane road with no shoulders. It is commonly used as part of organized bicycle rides and is a common route for local bicyclists. In addition it will be the main route for Route 66 through Missouri.
