Arnold City Park - Jefferson Barracks Bikeway Connection (06STL1058)

Status:

City: Arnold.    Route: Telegraph Road    Location: from the terminus at 6167 to Jefferson Barracks

Type: Shoulder, Bicycle Lane, Signs, trail connectors

Description:
Road should be a designated bikeway. Connects Jefferson County to St. Louis County. Connects Mississippi Greenway to Meramec Greenway. Trail connections to Bee Tree County Park, Cliff Caves County Park, and Jefferson Barracks should be added. Shoulders already exist; minor design improvements and signage will help facilitate more, safer bicycling on this route.

Importance:
The area between Telegraph and the Mississippi River is already designated as a future greenway by the Great Rivers Greenway District. There are great swaths of greenspace nearby, parks and unused flood plains. People who live nearby currently have trouble getting to these parks by bike. Telegraph, north of Jefferson Barracks becomes Broadway and goes straight downtown. A more bikable Telegraph Road makes a more active South County and in time a better Broadway. It connects St. Louis City to Jefferson County. Jefferson Barracks is getting redesigned, why not better incorporate regional bike transport into the picture?

Obstacles:
The length is a bit long. Most of it already has a shoulder lane that appears to be for bikes, though unmarked. The Greenway Districts trail network is not yet mature enough to be heavily used. As those trails develop, connecting them to Telegraph may be difficult because the area between has some suburban housing developments with private unbikable cul-de-sacs. Some possible trail connections still exist though. For instance, Cliff Cave County Park might connect to Telegraph off at the intersection with Erb Road.
