Crosswalk/ped signal at Chippewa Crossing @ River Des Peres, St Louis (06STL1177)

Status:

City: St. Louis.    Route: Route 366, Chippewa    Location: East side of River Des Peres Bridge

Type: Crosswalks

Description:
The informal east side River Des Peres trail crosses Chippewa here, as well as a nice bike route through residential neighborhoods to the Shrewsbury Metrolink Station. There is no easy way to get from here to the formal River Des Peres Trail, and crossing is perilous because of continuous traffic. A crosswalk, ideally one with lights, would help tie the neighborhoods north and south of Chippewa together, and make crossing safer. The nearby multi-family housing on Chippewa would also benefit. I have seen families and children trying to cross near here with great difficulty.

Importance:
This is one of those areas that have been given completely over to the car, and for that reason look unimportant and neglected. A crosswalk here would reverse that reality, knitting neighborhoods together, strengthening the faltering retail development in this area and making the nearby multi-family housing along Chippewa safer and more livable.
