Bike Lanes for Student Safety in Nevada (07JOP1080)

Status:

City: Nevada, MO.    Route: N. Ash    Location: within city limits

Type: Bicycle Lane, Crosswalks, Signs

Description:
To promote student and decrease childhood obesity, we would like to create clearly marked bicycle lanes from Truman Elementary School to the newly renovated Community Center in Nevada. This would include: 1) Bike lanes starting at Truman Elementary on W. Ashland to N. Ash St (BB Hwy), turning south on Ash to W. Hunter to the Community Center, approx. 6.5 miles 2) Lighted crosswalk at the corner of N. Ash and W. Hunter for safe crossing to the Community Center 3) "Share the Road" bicycle caution signs along the way.

Importance:
As a school nurse, I am acutely aware of the epidemic of childhood obesity in our society. This is affecting many areas of life as these children mature into unhealthy adults. The Nevada Trails Coalition would like to promote exercise among our youth, including the time-honored childhood sport of cycling. Since cycling is one of the only modes of transportation for children after school, (since parents are still at work), having safe routes for them to travel to supervised activities is of prime importance. Currently, Nevada has no such routes marked for our children.

Obstacles:
Money. Both the Nevada City Council and the Nevada Parks and Recreation Department, as well as the city manager, (all of whom we have met with at different times over the past six months), have been very open to our vision of providing safe cycling/walking for our children within the city limits. Money is our main obstacle.
