Widen Hwy 96 shoulders to 4-5 feet, Halltown to Carthage (Route 66 bicycle route) (07NAT0010)

Status:

City: Halltown - Carthage.    Route: Hwy 96    Location: 37.5 miles on Hwy 96 between Halltown & Carthage

Type:

Description:
Route 96 between Hallsville and Carthage currently has about 1-foot paved shoulders and 6 additional feet of gravel shoulder. Extend the paved shoulder to minimum 4-5 feet width. As this route is on a national bicycle route with regular bicycle use, rumble strips should be omitted, especially on any shoulders less than 4 feet wide. If rumble strips are added to shoulders less than 4 feet wide the shoulder becomes unusable for bicycling. Shoulders even just 1 or 2 feet wide are quite valuable to bicyclists if they do not have a rumble strip.

Importance:
This section of Hwy 96 is on the national Route 66 bicycle route and has been reported by bicyclists who have traveled the route as the single most difficult and dangerous section of Route 66 in Missouri. This section has narrow shoulders, about 1 or 2 feet of paved shoulders, and traffic counts between 3300 and 5000 ADT, far too high to comfortable share between motorists and bicyclists without a shoulder. This section is used by heavy trucks and other traffic to 'cut the corner' between Hwy 71 and I-55, saving a few miles. For that reason this segment has a large amount of high speed traffic. Yet it only has very narrow shoulders. Widening the shoulders would improve safety for motorists, provide a breakdown area, and also improve Route 66 across Missouri for bicyclists.
