Springfield North Glenstone Avenue Sidewalks, Springfield (08SPR1217)

Status:

City: Springfield, Missouri.    Route: Business Loop I-44    Location: Glenstone Avenue from Division Street (State Route YY) to Evergreen Street (south of I-44)

Type: Sidewalk, Curb cuts/ramps

Description:
Construct 9,600 feet of sidewalk along both sides of this 7,300-foot length of arterial street to complete the existing nine segments of sidewalk that total 5,000 feet.

Importance:
This route in north central Springfield serves numerous hotels and motels, restaurants, and retail businesses that face the street and industrial operations and residential areas behind the highway commercial businesses. There is a considerable amount of pedestrian activity as evidenced by the paths behind the curb. Glenstone Avenue carries between 30,000 and 36,000 vehicles per day and is served by five bus lines, each serving a portion of the segment, that converge at the intersection of Glenstone Avenue and Kearney Street. Three pedestrian crashes occurred in 2009. Addition of sidewalks will improve safety and facilitate walking.

Obstacles:
The right-of-way behind the curb is narrow (a 64-foot street in 80 feet of right-of-way) and many of the driveways are relatively steep.
