Missouri High Priority Bike/Ped/ADA Projects

Add shoulders on Hwy 21/72 from N/49 to Centerville (TransAmerica bicycle route) (09NAT0014)

Status:

City: Centerville.    Route: Hwy 21/72    Location: From N/49 to Centerville, about 5.5 miles

Type: Shoulders

Description:
Add minimum 4 foot shoulders to Hwy 21/72 from Hwy N/49 to Centerville and climbing out of Centerville (approx 9 miles). As this route is on a national bicycle route with regular bicycle use, rumble strips should be omitted, especially on any shoulders less than 4 feet wide. If rumble strips are added to shoulders less than 4 feet wide the shoulder becomes unusable for bicycling. Shoulders even just 1 or 2 feet wide are quite valuable to bicyclists if they do not have a rumble strip.

Importance:
The project is on the TransAmerica Bicycle Route and has been identified as one of the sections most needing improvement by local bicyclists who ride the route. The section has somewhat higher traffic counts than most sections of the TransAmerica Trail, about 1400 ADT.
