Add shoulders 7.6 miles west of Houston on Transamerica bicycle route (09NAT0017)

Status:

City: Houston.    Route: Hwy 17    Location: West of Houston on Hwy 17, 7.4 miles to Hwy 38 intersection

Type: Shoulders

Description:
Add minimum 4 foot shoulders to Hwy 17 7.4 miles west of Houston to Hwy 38 intersection. As this route is on a national bicycle route with regular bicycle use, rumble strips should be omitted, especially on any shoulders less than 4 feet wide. If rumble strips are added to shoulders less than 4 feet wide the shoulder becomes unusable for bicycling. Shoulders even just 1, 2, or 3 feet wide are quite valuable to bicyclists if they do not have a rumble strip.

Importance:
This is one of the areas on the TransAmerica cross-country bicycle trail with higher traffic counts (2500-3000 ADT). This is a two lane road with no shoulders and when traffic counts exceed 2500 ADT it becomes very, very uncomfortable for bicyclists and for motorists who have difficulty passing the bicyclists. Further west on Hwy 38 the traffic counts drop dramatically and the need for shoulders is greatly decreased. This project puts the shoulders only at the exact point of highest need. This 7.4 mile section already has existing good gravel shoulders and the complication and expense of paving them should be quite minimal.
