Description:
Improve Hwy 63/Kingshighway Intersection in Rolla for bicycling/walking. Simple improvements:
1. Traffic signal triggered by bicycles
2. Design & add crosswalk markings to allow ped movement in all directions.
3. Add ped signals to the traffic signal, adjust phases & allow enough time for pedestrians to cross safely.
More complex/expensive possible solution: Pedestrian overpass/underpass.
Importance:
I can't stress this one enough. The HWY 63/Kingshighway Intersection has NO accommodations for anyone other than cars. To cross this intersection by foot or bicycle is an extremely uncomfortable situation. I have seen folks in wheelchairs actually driving in the traffic lanes to get across. How dangerous is that? I believe a tunnel or pedestrian overpass is needed to rectify this situation.
The intersection is in the heart of Rolla, with a park on one corner, businesses on the other corners, sidewalks leading up from some (though not all) directions, nearby hotels, restaurants, and other destinations often used by tourists, students, and others who may not have automobiles.
