Shoulders on TransAmerica Bicycle Route (Hwy 106) between Ellington and Eminence (09WPL1234)
Status:
City: Ellington to Eminence. Route: Hwy 106 Location: from town to town, especially hills
Type: Shoulder
Description:
Added shoulders for safety, about 27 miles between Ellington & Eminence on Hwy 109.
As this route is on a national bicycle route with regular bicycle use, rumble strips should be omitted, especially on any shoulders less than 4 feet wide. If rumble strips are added to shoulders less than 4 feet wide the shoulder becomes unusable for bicycling.
Shoulders even just 1 or 2 feet wide are quite valuable to bicyclists if they do not have a rumble strip.
Importance:
Many large trucks and trailers on narrow road put cyclists in danger-Because of steep terrain cyclists are sometimes not even in view until vehicles top the hill-Heavy loads and wide vehicles in both directions make slowing down and/or stopping for cyclists on roadway difficult.
Scenic area visited by many.
This is on the TransAmerica Trail, a national bicycle route that is used regularly by cross-country and cross-state touring bicyclists.
