City: Coffman.    Route: Highway B    Location: from intersection of Highway F to Highway P in Ste Genevieve County (distance of 7 miles); ideally this would continue the full extent of the Hwy B project (From Hwy F to Hwy 32)

Type: Shoulder/rumble strip reduction or omission

Description:
Project is to generally make this route safer and friendlier for bicycling by tweaking the design parameters and including wider shoulders where possible. For instance, increase the width of the shoulders from 2' to 3-5' everywhere if possible, but if not possible everywhere then wherever right of way and other factors allow. Since this is a national bicycle route, omit rumble strips (or take measures to reduce their affect on bicyclists, such as only including them if the shoulder is 4 feet wide or more, making them narrower, adding periodic gaps in them, etc). Widening shoulders, even just a foot or two and even just in certain spots where it is possible, really helps make the route safer and more attractive for bicycling. Two foot shoulders without rumble strips are very helpful for bicyclists, but two foot shoulders with rumble strips actually makes a narrower roadway for bicycling than if there are no shoulders and no rumble strips.

Importance:
This project is already budgeted for 2010. This project is scheduled for 2010 (with bridge construction already in progress as of March 1). Some revisions would make the roadway much more bicycle friendly. This is a portion of the Trans America Trail in District 10. Roadway takes motorists and cyclists to several local wineries. It is commonly used by bicyclists, both nationwide bicycle tourists and local bicyclists and cycling groups. It would be used much more, especially since it is an attractive route to local wineries, if the route can be made more bicycle friendly.

Obstacles:
The fact that the project is already planned and suggested revisions would have to be addressed quickly
