Sales Tax Holiday

Missouri is one of many states that provide a back-to-school sales tax holiday to help families afford school supplies, clothing, and computers.  Family Bicycles in Kansas City has proposed adding bicycles and bike accessories to this list.

Senate Bill 937, sponsored by State Senator Jolie Justus.

Why a sales tax holiday on bicycles?

Affordable and sustainable transportation.  Many schools are cutting back on free busing as transportation costs rise.  Opportunities for safe and convenient bicycling can help family and school budgets while expanding student access to extra-curricular programs.

Physical fitness and health.  The sedentary lifestyles of modern youth are creating epidemics of obesity and diabetes, just as many schools are cutting physical education programs.  Bicycling to school is a great way to address these problems.

Safe Routes to School.  Missouri is one of 19 states with a state-wide Safe Routes to School Network working make it easier and safer for students bicycle and/or walk to school.  Affordable access to bicycles is a key part of this initiative.

Support small businesses.  Most Missouri bike shops are locally-owned small businesses that are important parts of their local communities.
