Tour of Missouri 2008 announced for Sept 9-14
Saturday, September 29, 2007
According to Post-Dispatch columnist Kathleen Nelson: Mark your calendars for Sept. 9 to 14, 2008. The UCI has.
Union Cycliste Internationale, cycling's international governing body, and USA Cycling have given their blessings to the second Tour of Missouri, scheduled to begin next year on the second Tuesday of September, just as the inaugural event did. The route and host cities will be announced later.
"We couldn't have been happier with Missouri," said Sean Petty, chief operating officer of USA Cycling. "The biggest surprise was the knowledge of the fans. You'd see farmers and their families with signs, people in the towns setting up barbecue pits and lawn chairs. They knew what to do and how to enjoy the race. And the number of people who came out in Kansas City and St. Louis was beyond our expectations. You usually don't see that level of knowledge and enthusiasm in a first-time event."

Fan Experience: Watching the Tour at Schluersburg Road
Wesley Stephen, a Tour of Missouri volunteer and fan, writes about his experience with the Tour, watching on Schluersburg Road near the end of Stage 5: It was my pleasure serving as a volunteer (in downtown St. Charles) and as a fan out on the course at the KOM competition in Augusta. The atmosphere on Schluersburg Rd. was truly electric and pregnant with anticipation. With hundreds of spectators lining the street (some arriving as early as 9:30 am that morning), it was clear that we were there to witness an unforgettable event.
Additionally, the atmosphere was also quite festive, with many picnickers, including the owner of one bike shop who had hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks just for the asking. At least two local bike clubs rode in or to Augusta for their regular Saturday morning ride.
As these cyclists climbed to the apex of Schluersburg Rd., between 1:30 and 2:30, they were widely cheered and serenaded with cowbells. Awesome, indeed! We'd love to see your fan or volunteer experience posted here. Please write up a few paragraphs and send to director [at] mobikefed.org.

Tour of MO report--from 2nd place GC winner
Thursday, September 20, 2007
Will Frischkorn of Team Slipstream-Chipotle, who took overall 2nd place in the Tour of MO, fills us in on his perception of the Tour of Missouri and (especially) why the big 15-minute breakaway was able to get away in Stage 2: Normally I try and refrain from writing race reports. I figure that most people read enough "this guy attacked and then those teams chased that guy and then this team did the lead out and those guys sprinted and that guy won" and if I can come up with something about our lives or experiences that give insight into what racing a bike is all about it might be more interesting. . . .
With that in mind, a bit about the Tour of Missouri:
· First, and this is something that surprised all of us, nearly every day, it the fact that the crowds were amazing. For a first-year event you never quite know what to expect, especially in an area not commonly thought of as a hotbed of professional cycling. Contrary to the speculation otherwise, there were crowds everywhere.
Starting in downtown Kansas City at 1p.m. on a Tuesday the start area and expo were both packed. As we made our way through town the streets were lined with cubicle warriors taking a short break from the grind. Along the entire route, the citizens of every little town we made our way through turned out in full force. From start to finish we couldn't have been welcomed more warmly and it's exciting to see this kind of enthusiasm out there for our sport. Hopefully it's a sign of the relative health of cycling in the U.S. currently and looking forward.
A big thanks goes out to the people of Missouri for making us feel so welcome and I hope to be back next fall.
· The racing? One hot topic in the press was the big break that slid away on Wednesday gaining 15 minutes over the field and the subsequent accusations of teams not caring, not honoring the jersey/race, not "racing", etc,
While the big split that went in Georgia this spring was a big surprise to all I don't think a single team was caught off guard by this one single bit. Most could have told you two months ago that this was going to happen, and this was the day where it would go. With a short race and a fresh field this was unlikely to happen on the first day, but a 220k day over rolling roads the day before the TT was a textbook setup for this scenario.
We were lucky to have two in the split and it ended up providing a springboard to great overall results. Every single one of us on Slipstream spent the morning going crazy covering and attacking (racing - hard racing), knowing that it was only a matter of time before the elastic band snapped and the move went up the road, way up the road. Why?
As the season starts to wind down race dynamics change. After eight months of racing some people are simply tired, others have signed contracts and have a bit of CBF syndrome, others are in desperation mode and still hunting for jobs and a small crew of riders simply have good form and a bit of leftover motivation and are looking to capitalize.
In a flat race like this with nothing significant to sort out the race other than a time trial (a really hard one at that) there is a tendency for a group of those in the last two categories above to roll away. A team or two will be caught out and put up a chase for as long as possible but if the selection up front has the proper breakdown of riders and enough horsepower it's a tough task to reel them back. It took almost two hours for the proper group to form up here in Missouri and then another 20k of flat out rotation at 30 seconds in front of a hard chasing field, but once the gas went off behind, we were gone. The fuss and the fact that it was "unexpected" was a bit of a surprise to those of us actually racing. Simply put, it's a normal and expected scenario this late in the season.

Meanwhile, Charles Huff of Springfield is at #20 over all after the second stage. VeloNews has a recap of the day. Spectator turnout continued to be big for the second day of the race. An estimated 5,000-10,000 people saw the finish in Springfield. The News-Leader has a special section with lots of coverage and photos. Today is an 18-mile individual time trial in Branson. ToM Stage 1 a huge success
MoBikeFed Board Member Eric Rogers, who was at Stage 1 in Kansas City today, reports: If you haven't heard yet, Ivan Dominguez of Toyota United won Stage 1. It was an awesome day. The city was packed, at least 15,000 at the start/finish line and thousands more along the route.
Here is the recap from VeloNews
And some video from the KC Star
The KC Fox station has more video and photos from today
Spectators are starting to post photos on Flickr (If you post photos to flickr or similar sites please tag them with both "tourofmissouri" and "tourofmissouri2007")Unofficial estimates had crowd sizes along the entire route at perhaps 40,000. At any rate it was well into the tens of thousands. Web site hits for the day were into the 6 figures. Vendors I talked to said they had sold far more tour-related merchandise than they do when they visit the Tour of Georgia . . . in fact for some items they sold out almost their entire week's alotment in just one day. So if you want ToM swag, you'd better buy it early in the week! So yes--the Tour of Missouri is here and it is here BIG!

Clydesdale rode part of Stage 1 with the "Route of Champions" Sunday, and gives his thoughts about the race and spectators: All in all I would have to say that it is a great course for viewing the race and really getting to experience professional riding at its best. The out and back design allow multiple opportunities to see them as well as the great finishing circuit. It could not have a better venue to see the fireworks. By the way if you are looking for a place to watch for crashes then the last left hander completing the circuit is your spot. It will be fast and is on a slight downhill with an outward slope to it. They referred to it at the volunteer meeting as "Hay Bale Corner". The winning move will have to clear this corner fast on the last lap as it is only 400-500 meters to the finish from there. Podium Cafe looks to have more coverage of the Tour of MO as it develops.

Watching the Tour: What to do, what NOT to do
Sunday, September 9, 2007
Steve Rock of the KCStar writes: consider this your primer, a Cliffs Notes version of how to — and perhaps how not to — watch the Tour of Missouri bike race that starts Tuesday at the Country Club Plaza.
The 120 world-class riders won’t be here long, covering 85 miles in less than four hours, before moving on to stage 2 in Clinton, Mo., on Wednesday.
Race officials hope thousands of Kansas Citians line the course, but they’re just not sure what to expect. Neither are Kansas Citians, for that matter.
So we’re here to help.
•Start with this: Your dog. . . .
•Similar precautions should be taken by you and your children. Stay behind the barricade, and don’t try anything silly like high-fiving the riders . . .
•Wherever you see hay bales along the course, pop open a folding chair. . . . Hey, it doesn’t mean you want somebody to crash, but if it’s going to happen, you might as well have a good view.
•Catch at least some of the action in person, even if you’re stuck working that day. You don’t have to block out two or three hours of your afternoon because the race’s Web site — www.tourofmissouri.com — shows the approximate time that racers will be in certain areas. Sneak out of the office for 20 or 30 minutes and show some support.
•If high-flying action is what you’re looking for, check out maps on the Web site for “Sprint Line” and “KOM” (king of the mountain) areas. Riders get bonus points for reaching these areas first, so the competition promises to be intense.
•Most importantly, soak up the revelry.
Race organizers want to make it an all-day affair, particularly in stops like Kansas City, where the racers bike on a circuitous route but start and end at the same spot near Pennsylvania Avenue and Ward Parkway on the Plaza.
There will be autograph sessions at the starting line, and the race will be broadcast live on a 12-foot-by-18-foot movie screen. Read the rest of the Star's story here.

Tour of missouri is Discovery Channel Team's last race together
Friday, September 7, 2007
According to a CBS Sports story:Discovery has a few more races left on its calendar. But the inaugural Tour of Missouri, which begins Tuesday in Kansas City, is the final time its top riders will compete together.
"It hit me a long time ago," said fellow American rider Levi Leipheimer. "I would describe it as sad, but I guess nothing lasts forever."
Team director Johan Bruyneel, who oversaw strategy for all eight tour victories, said his time with the team was rewarding but exhausting.
"It's the end of a beautiful period in my life," Bruyneel said. "All good things come to an end. I'm kind of preparing for it a little bit, but until you're in the heat of the action, you don't really realize this is it."
Bruyneel said the team chose to bring its star riders to the Missouri race -- instead of the prestigious Spanish Vuelta, where Discovery is fielding some of its lesser-known riders -- as a thank-you to American fans.
Hincapie and Leipheimer will be joined by Spanish rider Alberto Contador, the 24-year-old who won the Tour de France in July. And while the riders are exhausted, Discovery is coming to win.
"It's not going to be a holiday race," Bruyneel said. "Our guys are performing." . . .
Armstrong, who remained a part-owner of the team after retiring in 2005, announced in August that the team was halting its sponsorship search and would disband.
"It's a sad day for cycling. Certainly a sad day for American cycling," Armstrong said last month. "We're proud of our record."
And, no doubt, of the impact it had on U.S. sports fans.
Americans were aware of cycling after Greg LeMond won the Tour de France in 1986, 1989 and 1990. But Armstrong's story of cancer survival put the brash Texan -- and the Tour -- front and center in the American sports consciousness.
By the time Armstrong was going for his sixth Tour victory in 2004, yellow "LIVESTRONG" cancer-awareness wristbands were everywhere and L'Alpe d'Huez was the subject of office water-cooler conversations.
"I never imagined that," Hincapie said. "Even he never imagined it, when the whole wristband thing started."
But Bruyneel said Armstrong's first victory, in 1999, was the sweetest.
"We were convinced we could win, but nobody else was," Bruyneel said. "He became more than an athlete. He survived cancer and won the most difficult sporting event in the world."

A fan's guide to the Tour of Missouri
Thursday, September 6, 2007
With the biggest pro bicycle race in the history of Missouri--some say the biggest sporting event ever--coming next week, do Missourians know how to watch a bicycle race? "It's not just a race, it's a rolling parade, a traveling festival," says Missouri Bicycle Federation Executive Director Brent Hugh. "Every seat is free, and every seat is a front row seat. You can get within inches of the athletes as they speed down a straightaway at 40 miles per hour or climb a Missouri hill at breath-taking speeds." As other sports fans know, watching the race is just part of the fun. "Experienced race fans make the race a big party--just like fans who 'tailgate' at a football game," says Hugh. "You bring your friends, your food, your barbecue, your beer--and you have a good time." "At the Tour of Georgia, they tripled the number of spectators from the first year to the second--because those who came the first year went home and told their friends what a great time they had." Here are some tips for those who want to watch the Tour--and have a great time: * There is *no bad place* to watch the Tour. But seasoned fans do tend to seek out certain spots: - Start line, finish line - Sprint points or "King of the Mountain" points mid-race - Feed zones - Long or difficult hills on the route - Any point on the route nearest where they live or work Course logs, available online at http://tourofmissouri.com/stages, list all these points and estimated times of arrival. * Finish line areas will have giant-screen TVs showing live race footage along with color commentary. Fans can watch the race develop on the big screen, then watch the finish live. * Start and finish line areas will have health and wellness expos, exhibits, bands playing, and other events. "It's like a parade, a festival, and a party all rolled into one--and a race besides," says Hugh. * It is possible to plan your day to watch the start, one or more important intermediate points, and then the finish as well. * Those along the route can watch the race live via video feeds at TourofMissouri.com, then go outside at the right time to see the race come by live. This year's Tour de Georgia web site had approximately 2.1 million hits during race week. * The Tour is one of the "big three" U.S. pro tours, along with the Tour of California (estimated 1.8 million spectators this year) and the Tour de Georgia (700,000 spectators this year). Some individual stages in the Tour de France attract over a million spectators. * Pro bicyclists are very approachable before and after the race. Part of the fun is showing up at a pre-race event with one of the athletes, getting an autograph during "Autograph Alley", and watching the awards ceremonies with athletes and celebrities after each stage. * Cycling is a team sport that incorporates a huge amount of psychology and strategy in addition to pure athleticism. Much of the interest is in watching how each of the teams uses their members offensively and defensively throughout the tour. More at http://mobikefed.org/tag/tailgate* Pro bicycle racing is a much bigger sport internationally than it is in the U.S. That means that the international exposure--including world media that is attracted to the final U.S. race of the #1 ranked Discovery Channel Team and Tour de France winner Alberto Contador--will be a huge benefit to Missouri. --- Online: http://tourofmissouri.comRoute sheets, course logs and timings, maps, route profiles: http://tourofmissouri.com/stagesRelated events, bicycle rides, bike rodeos, festivals, etc: http://tourofmissouri.com/calendarNews & info: http://mobikefed.org/tourofmissouriTailgating the Tour of Missouri: http://mobikefed.org/tag/tailgate

Here are just a few of the events from Stage 1 in Kansas City: - Sunday, September 9th, 8AM ride the Route of Champions--take the same route the pro racers will be riding just two days later. Avid bicyclists can enjoy the full 70-mile route but there are novice and family friendly options at 14 and 36 miles as well.
- Monday, September 10th from 6 to 9 p.m., the inaugural Tour of Missouri kicks off with a Team Presentation and Charity Auction Gala at the Intercontinental Hotel on the Country Club Plaza!
- The Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team will appear at the Trek Bicycle Store of Kansas City on Monday, September 10th at 5 pm to help raise money for “Headstrong for Jake” and the “Major Taylor Foundation.”
- Volunteer celebration party on the Plaza near the finish line, immediately after the race and awards conclude. (Of course . . . it's only for those who volunteer.)
- Post-race party with the Major Taylor Foundation. Proceeds benefit the Major Taylor Foundation of Greater Kansas City. 6-9PM Tuesday, September 11th, 5000 Wornall Rd, Kansas City, MO.

Tour of Missouri: Are you riding in it?
Monika Kleban writes in the West County Journal: Several times during the last few months when I have said so to non-cycling co-workers and friends, their response was along the lines of: "Oh. That's a bike ride, isn't it? Are you riding in it?"
This makes me realize two things: One, I evidently talk too much about my cycling, running and triathlon adventures; and two, the Tour of Missouri needs more publicity.
"No!" I exclaim. "It's a professional race. With world-class cyclists! The guys who ride the Tour de France, you know?"
Unfortunately, even this explanation doesn't usually produce much excitement. Which is why some folks in the local cycling community are worried. What if nobody shows up to watch? Missouri could embarrass itself in the eyes of cycling fans all over the world. The Tour of Missouri is only the third stage race of this caliber in the United States. There's the Tour of California, predictably a very popular venue, and the Tour de Georgia which, according to its Web site, has brought out 2.3 million spectators during the last four years. And, of course, there are numerous such races in Europe, the most famous being the Tour de France, with millions of fans lining the roadsides each year. Read the rest of Monika's column "MY TAKE: Hey, Missourians; cycling is a major sport, too" here.
