Four days of racing in the Gateway Cup in St. Louis over Labor Day weekend kicked off the 2009 Tour of Missouri.
The Gateway Cup saw some its largest crowds ever as racers and fans came to the area from all across the country for one of the biggest weekends of racing the area has seen.
I made it to the Hill in St. Louis first for
TrailNet's Giro & Tour of Missouri Sunday ride, which took us along a part of the route the Tour riders followed the next day, and also showed off many miles of the Bike St. Louis bicycle route next work.
I was able to stay and watch a good part of the Giro della Montagna Sunday also, too--where half the attraction is the bicycle racing and the other half, the ambience of a really great neighborhood where people line their yards to watch the race and enjoy each other's company.
Gateway Cup events continued at 7 a.m. Monday morning, leading up to the start of the first stage of the Tour of Missouri, which kicked off at 2:30 p.m.
About the biggest hits on the Hill Sunday was the Childrens' Races:
Lieutenant Governor Kinder has become a lot more popular in places like the Hill because of his support for the Tour of Missouri and bicycling in general. Lieutenant Governor Kinder stopped by the Hill Sunday afternoon to start one of the races.
Thanks to Joe P. for lending me his bike on short notice for the ride Sunday and for helping us out with several sticky situations during the Tour Monday. Some people definitely go far and above the call of duty . . .
