Support for Rock Island Trail - Gasconade County Republican: Editorials

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

Fast forward to today where times have changed and Missourians demand a more diverse, cleaner energy portfolio. There is a shift in philosophy. Sections of this railway once slated to bring coal to this state are now being repurposed as a new nature/biking/walking trail.

Working alongside Missouri Rock Island Line, Inc., the Missouri Bicycle Federation, Ameren Corp. and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the old Rock Island line railroad will come alive again to connect local Missouri communities, but this time to also promote healthy living and economic development.

While it could take many years for full completion, this new trail could stretch from Pleasant Hill all the way to Washington. It could potentially link up with the Katy Trail creating the Missouri Super Trail creating a loop trail spanning over 400 miles in length.

In the coming months, we expect the MoDNR to host a series of public meetings so the local communities affected can offer their concerns and support. These steps are not new to Missourians as our state’s gem of a state park — the Katy Trail — faced a similar process.
