A nonprofit is giving Sioux City more than $1 million to help complete the riverfront trail system along Interstate 29.

The $1.25 million grant from Missouri River Historical Development will be formally presented at a ceremony at City Hall on Friday, the Sioux City Journal (http://bit.ly/1qien3F ) reported.

The city's parks and recreation director, Matt Salvatore, said the gift will be used to help fund the estimated $2.9 million extension of the riverfront trail at Chris Larsen Park. The connection south toward Chautauqua Park could be finished by fall 2017.

"This is a game changer for Sioux City and all of Siouxland," Salvatore said. "This contribution toward our trails will help connect the most high priority trail project for the city and support numerous trail connections."

When the gaps are filled in, the trail will span roughly 10 miles and include two new bridges, Salvatore said.

MoBikeFed comment: This is the type of project that is happening in cities around the country, around the midwest, and across Missouri.

More and more, this type of trail system is simply and expected feature of any city.
