Census: MO population up 7%, St Louis population down 8%

Data for Missouri from the 2010 Census has been released. Missouri as a whole is up 7% in population since 200, close to the national average of 9.7%.  St. Louis City is down 8.3% while St. Louis County is down 2%.

The downtrend in St. Louis was the subject of an extensive post on Streetsblog.net entitled Sprawl Wallops St. Louis With Eight Percent Population Loss:

The Gateway City had already lost a greater share of its population than any other major US city. The latest count brings it down to a total 319,294 from a height of 856,796 residents in 1950.

Concern builds about possible opposition to bicycle & pedestrian funding in the federal transportation budget

Yesterday we reported that the U.S. House is preparing the to introduce large cuts to the proposed federal budget and an attempt could be made to dramatically cut or even eliminate funding for bicycle and pedestrian transportation in the federal budget.

Why the concern?

The short answer is that some members of Congress have declared that cutting these programs is among their priorities--and after the recent elections, some of those members are now in key leadership positions.

Proposals by Eric Cantor, House Majority Leader
Eric Cantor, now House Majority Leader, has been particularly vocal in demanding cuts in bicycle and pedestrian related programs. A budget proposal posted at ericcantor.com includes these paragraphs:

Terminate Safe Routes to Schools Program (Saves $915 Million over five years)
The Federal “Safe Routes to Schools Program,” started in 2005, finances infrastructure and non- infrastructure projects to assist children who walk or bike to school. This program fulfills what has traditionally been viewed as a local responsibility.

Texting ban advances in Missouri Senate

A bill to extend Missouri's texting ban to all ages advances in the Missouri Senate.  Join us at Capitol Day on February 1st and ask your Senator to vote for it.

Missouri already has a law prohibiting motorists under 21 from texting while driving.  Senate Bill 11, sponsored by Ryan McKenna, would extend that ban to all motorists, and today it was approved by the Transportation Committee and sent to the full Senate for debate.

You can help pass the texting ban by attending Bicycle & Pedestrian Day at the Capitol on February 1st and talking to your own Senator and Representative.

House Bill 93 is a similar bill introduced in the House of Representatives, but it has yet to get a committee hearing. Seven of the eight states bordering Missouri already have all-ages texting bans (all except Oklahoma).
