River crossing at Rte 78 and Little Blue, Independence (04KCM1153)
Status: Awarded
City: Independence. Route: Rte 78 Location: At intersection of the Little Blue River and Route 78
Type: Bicycle Lane, Bridge
Description:
The bike path in the area crosses the river at this location but does not have a designated bridge for bikers. Those wishing to continue on the trail must traverse a steep incline on either side and then navigate the motor vehicle bridge. This can get scary for both the riders and the drivers. The bridges both have wide shoulders but the road is four lanes and must be crossed. Many bikers also cross the bridge counter to the flow of traffic, ie: headed east on the westbound bridge.
Importance:
A pedestrian bridge would keep bikers and motor vehicles seperated and safer. The amount of children present would make this an investment in our future in more than one way.
Obstacles:
Accounting for the flood stage of the little blue as it is unpredictable at times.
