Status:

City: Kansas City, MO.    Route: Lewis and Clark Expressway    Location: Intersection of Front and Century Avenue south to bridge at Blue River

Type: Trail/path

Description:
Segments of trail offer connectivity to other regional trails both north and south of Front Street and Century Avenue. To the north, a trail segment extends from Front Street to the South Missouri Riverfront Trail located on top of the Missouri River levee system. To the south, a trail extension connects the Lewis & Clark Expressway and South Missouri Riverfront Trails to the Blue River Trail. bicycle and pedestrian (bike/ped) connectivity includes trail facilities and connections to existing and/or proposed transit and sidewalk facilities. In Sugar Creek, a trail construction on Sterling Avenue will provide connection south to other trails being proposed in Independence. The trail connecting the Front Street and Sterling Avenue areas will link the two, and create a viable bicycle route for trips to employment centers as well as recreation in the river bottom area. The trail would also connect east to LaBenite Park in Sugar Creek and also to two Lewis & Clark campsites.

Importance:
Bicycle and pedestrian (bike/ped) connectivity includes trail facilities and connections to existing and/or proposed sidewalk facilities. This continuous connection of a trail network would provide continuity from Riverfront Park in Kansas City to LaBenite Park in Sugar Creek Missouri. There are two Lewis and Clark camp sites along this trail route. This trail system would also connect to a trail south of Hwy 24 in Independence, MO.

Obstacles:
Creating a safe bicycle and pedestrian crossing of the Blue River and Rock Creek while also overcoming potential environmental concerns. Also eliminating the current at grade railroad crossing in Sugar Creek with a grade separated crossing to improve safety.
