Missouri High Priority Bike/Ped/ADA Projects

Widen shoulders, fix drain grates, make other possible adjustments to accommodate bike/ped/ada on 5/54 overpass, Camdenton (05JEF0010)

Status: Under construction

City: Camdenton.    Route: Hwy 54    Location: Hwy 5 overpass at 54

Type: restriping/drain grates

Description:
The New Hwy 5 overpass on Hwy 54 is too narrow, it is dangerous not only for pedestrians, but cyclist alike. This project will narrow lanes to make a minimum four foot shoulder and replace drain grates and expansion joints to make them bicycle safe. Other solutions to address this serious deficiency are also welcomed.

Importance:
This is a brand new overpass in the middle of a city, a populated area, very close to both residential and commercial areas. It is potentially the best/safest way for bicyclists & pedestrians to cross the 5-lane Hwy 54 through Camdenton. However it was constructed without considering the needs of bicyclists and pedestrians. Widening or replacing the existing bridge, or adding a bicycle/pedestrian bridge in addition, will be extremely expensive. This project proposes simple, inexpensive solutions that will improve the bicycle, pedestrian, and ADA accessibility of Camdenton significantly. They will not replace the need eventually fix the overpass by adding real bicycle, pedestrian, and ADA accommodations but they will help fill a strong need in the meanwhile, and a low cost.
