Shoulders on EB Hwy 30 Meramec Bridge Crossing-- Fenton (06STL1057)
Status: Completed
City: Fenton. Route: Highway 30 Location: on the bridge crossing the Meramec EB from the 141 interchange
Type: Shoulder, Bicycle Lane, Signs
Description:
There is no shoulder on the eastbound deck of the Highway 30 bridge, only a too-long merging lane that goes all the way to the edge of the bridge.
Importance:
This is just changing lane markings. Poor lane design takes the RH merging lane all the way across the bridge, right over where cyclists will ride. The long merging lane is not needed as natural driver instinct means motorists merge into the through lanes well before they get to the bridge.
Changing the lane markings and putting up "share the road" signs would offer cyclists a safe bridge crossing on a high-speed, high-volume road, particularly in an area that has few places to cross the Meramec. This means no added construction, no lane restrictions, eliminations or reductions. Just safe and happy cyclists. Additionally, this adds a safe pedestrian crossing as well, which is presently non-existent on the east-bound side of the bridge.
Obstacles:
I am not aware of any obstacles to getting this done.
