Highway K Bike Lanes and Pedestrian Path (06STL1245)

Status:

City: O'Fallon.    Route: Hwy K    Location: Entire length of Hwy K

Type: Bicycle lanes (in shoulder, possibly), improvements to ped path

Description:
Add bicycle lane striping and signage to Highway K, and fill in gaps to the adjacent pedestrian path as needed.

Importance:
Highway K is a significant arterial highway in O'Fallon and St Charles County, enabling significant growth and development in the City of O'Fallon over the last two decades. While the highway has expanded to meet the growing demand for auto traffic, little has been done to create a safer, more efficient system for moving non-motorized traffic. Perceived danger due in part to lack of adequate facilities has deflated current usage of Highway K, despite the arterial's role as the transportation backbone of the community. Adding bicycle and pedestrian enhancements to this roadway will create significant opportunities for O'Fallon residents to walk, bike and run to nearby destinations, lead healthier lifestyles, and leave their automobiles at home.

Obstacles:
Current access management along Highway K could lead to many bike-auto and ped-auto conflicts.
