Missouri High Priority Bike/Ped/ADA Projects

Shoulders, intersection improvements on Christian County Ozark - Nixa Corridor (08SPR1181)

Status:

City: Ozark and Nixa.    Route: Highway 14    Location: From the Ozark Community Center to the Nixa Community Center

Type: Shoulder, Bicycle Lane, Intersection improvements, Crosswalks, Signs

Description:
From 2000 to 2008, Christian County was the fastest growing county in Missouri and the 44th nationally (http://www.christiancountymo.gov/). This provides a terrific opportunity to leverage the close proximity of the two largest towns in Christian County: Nixa and Ozark. Ozark recently finished off its own community center, complete with a 10 foot wide multi-use trail terminating at the community center. It would be terrific synergy to leverage the existing trail, connect to the new Ozarks Technical Community College Richwood Valley campus between Ozark and Nixa, and join up with the Nixa Community center in the heart of Nixa.

Importance:
* Christian County is the fastest growing county in the state * Discussions with the board of the Mulberry Ridge Subdivision, bordered by the subdivisions of Ozark Heights, Creek Bridge, and Stone Gate, indicate an interest in contributing up to $10,000 of its own money should the project intersect with its planned trails. * The OTC Richwood Valley Campus is right between Ozark and Nixa * Existing, low-traffic backroads already exist * Parts of Fremont road from Springfield has already been designated a bicycle-friendly lane. This would create a network that goes from Springfield to both Nixa and Ozark.

Obstacles:
* To connect the community center at the City of Ozark with Nixa, you would either need to go over Highway 65 or under it: there is possible access just north of the highway 65 Finley River bridge. * Additional problems would occur crossing highway 14 to get access to the OTC Campus
