Description:
Construct 15,000 feet of new sidewalk along both sides of this 8,600-foot length of arterial street to complete the sidewalk system.

Importance:
This route in northwest Springfield serves numerous restaurants and retail and service businesses and a school that face the street and residential areas behind the commercial businesses. There is a considerable amount of pedestrian activity as evidenced by the paths behind the curb. Traffic volumes on Kearney Street range from 24,000 vehicles per day west of Broadway Avenue to 16,000 vehicles per day east of Fulbright Avenue. The segment east of Kansas Expressway is served by three bus lines and the segment west of Kansas Expressway is served by one bus line. Three pedestrian and one bicycle crash occurred in 2009. Addition of sidewalks will improve safety and facilitate walking.

Obstacles:
East of Kansas Expressway the right-of-way behind the curb is narrow (a 60-foot street in 80 feet of right-of-way) and many of the driveways are relatively steep.
