Status: Awarded

City: Springfield, Missouri.    Route: I-44 Business Loop    Location: Chestnut Expressway (I-44 Business Loop) from Kansas Expressway (State Route 13) to Glenstone Avenue (Business Route 65)

Type: Sidewalk, Curb cuts/ramps, Intersection improvements, Crosswalks, Signs, Signal Features

Description:
Add pedestrian signals and pushbuttons to traffic signals at nine intersections (Broadway, Main, Campbell, Boonville, Jefferson, Benton, Sherman, and Fremont) on Chestnut Expressway.

Importance:
Chestnut Expressway bisects central Springfield providing motor traffic access but serving as a barrier for pedestrian and bicycle access. Four of the cross streets are existing or proposed bike routes. Traffic volumes on Chestnut Expressway range from 27,000 vehicles per day at each end to 35,000 vehicles per day near downtown. Five bus routes cross this portion of Chestnut Expressway. There are a number of government services, retail and service businesses, education facilities, industries, and residences adjacent to chestnut Expressway, each of which generate considerable trips of all modes. Upgrading the traffic signals will improve safety for existing pedestrian and bicycle movements and facilitate more non-motorized trips.

Obstacles:
Right-of-way is available at each location. Existing equipment is obsolete and will require full traffic signal replacement.
