Add shoulders on Hwy 21/106 within 2 miles of Ellington (TransAmerica bicycle route) (09NAT0015)

Status:

City: Ellington.    Route: Hwy 21 & 106    Location: Two miles of Hwy 21 north of Elllington and two miles of Hwy 106 west of Ellington; four miles total

Type:

Description:
Add minimum 4 foot shoulders to Hwy 21 for two miles north of Ellington; add minimum 4 foot shoulders to Hwy 106 for two miles west of Ellington. As this route is on a national bicycle route with regular bicycle use, rumble strips should be omitted, especially on any shoulders less than 4 feet wide. If rumble strips are added to shoulders less than 4 feet wide the shoulder becomes unusable for bicycling. Shoulders even just 1, 2, or 3 feet wide are quite valuable to bicyclists if they do not have a rumble strip.

Importance:
This is one of the areas on the TransAmerica cross-country bicycle trail with higher traffic counts (1500-2000 ADT). This is a two lane road with no shoulders and when traffic counts exceed 1500 ADT it becomes uncomfortable for bicyclists and for motorists who have difficulty passing the bicyclists. Further out from Ellington the traffic counts drop dramatically and the need for shoulders is greatly decreased. This project puts the shoulders only at the exact point of highest need.
