Shawnee Parkway (10CAP0000)

Status: Awarded

City: Cape Girardeau .    Route: MO Hwy 74    Location: State Line at Mississippi River to Siemers Dr.

Type: Bicycle accommodations

Description:
Designate Shawnee Parkway/MO Highway 74 through Cape Girardeau from Missouri state line at Mississippi River bridge to Siemers Drive as official Bike Route. Use existing paved shoulders as striped/stenciled/signed bicycle travel lanes. This would include stormwater grate replacements at left turn lane onto Fountain St. to Southeast Missouri State University River Campus, push button crossing signals at all signalized intersections and special bike welcome signage upon entering Missouri at Bill Emerson Memorial bridge crossing. On the community level this route provides numerous advantages for local bicycle traffic. On the western end, Shawnee Parkway provides a safe bicycle passage over Interstate 55 with a wide shouldered bridge and convenient access to Cape Central High School, Cape Girardeau Career & Technology Center, West Park Mall, Cape Girardeau Doctor?s Park and US Governmental offices. Additionally, this roadway connects several major bike corridors within the city, tying into three north/south bicycle routes. It also provides access to Shawnee Park (a community recreational facility), the LaCroix Creek multi-purpose trail, Southeast Missouri State University?s River Campus and Siemers Drive, a major retail shopping zone. [3.2 miles]

Importance:
Shawnee Parkway (MO State Highway 74) is a major east/west bike corridor for the City of Cape Girardeau. The eastern end of this roadway crosses the Mississippi River over the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge onto Illinois State Highway 146. This is the Missouri egress point of Adventure Cycling?s Trans-America bicycle trail, which runs across America from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean. The eastern terminus of Shawnee Parkway is also the intersection of two major bicycle touring routes, the Trans-America Trail and the Mississippi River Trail. This roadway requires minimal construction work to achieve the goal of a designated bicyle route. Wide paved shoulders protected by rumble strips are already in place. Basically lane striping, stencils and signs will complete the project. All major intersections are equipped with traffic signals, though push-button signals should be installed at five of the crossing points. (Fountain St., West End Blvd., Kingshighway, Silver Spring Rd. and Mt. Auburn Rd.)
