Status:
City: Cape Girardeau . Route: MO State Route W Location: Lexington Ave. to LaSalle Ave.
Type: Bicycle accommodations
Description:
Designate MO State Route W in Cape Girardeau County as bicycle route. (Phase I) Add shouldering as necessary on MO SR-W from Lexington Ave./US Highway 61 intersection to LaSalle Rd. intersection as first phase. (Second phase to extend lanes to MO State Highway 177 intersection in Fruitland.) Use new & existing paved shoulders as striped/stenciled/signed bicycle travel lanes. [4.2 miles]
Importance:
[4.2 miles] State Route W (MO SR-W) is first choice as an alternative bicycle route to the neighboring community of Jackson, MO via LaSalle Ave./Main St. This connector allows bypassing the heavily trafficked Kingshighway/US 61 corridor and crossing under Interstate 55 at the LaSalle Ave./Main St. intersection which leads directly to downtown Jackson. Farther north, the Mississippi River Trail travels on MO SR-W for several miles. The southern terminus of this proposed route accesses the LaCroix Creek multi-purpose trail. This route also connects to two designated bicycle routes in Cape Girardeau at Lexington Ave. and Perryville Rd. allowing for a complete circuit to be formed. SR-W has the additional benefit of crossing several county roads that are frequently traveled by bicyclists. (CR-620, CR-621 & CR-618)
