First Annual Missouri Farm Tour--by bicycle
Submitted by Brent Hugh on Wed, 10/10/2012 - 1:46pm
The Missouri Farm Tour is planning to tour small-scale family farms across Missouri, helping with farm work along the way, and touring by bicycle:
The Missouri Farm Tour is the locally-owned, volunteer-driven, multi-modal, annual working tour of small-scale family farms across Missouri - and we're looking for Farms, Volunteers, and Sponsors! The primary goal of the Tour is to help small-scale Missouri farmers. The Tour will coordinate qualified Volunteers with each participating Farm's needs, and hopes to pass through each region of the state and help out at many types of farms.
FarmsFarmers are our heroes! We are here to help them. In exchange for qualified volunteer farm workers, the Farm need only provide:
- basic "room & board" (a bed & some food - no special needs)
- transportation assistance between neighboring farms (e.g. ride share, bike tire, bus ticket - or just pick them up)
- occasional internet / phone access (to help coordinate Tour logistics).
VolunteersEach Volunteer (warmly regarded as "Missouri Mules") will be pre-qualified by the Tour Office as able-bodied, intelligent, and enthusiastic about Missouri agriculture. Volunteers will work at each participating Farm for 1-4 weeks (depending on farm needs) performing basically ANY farm chore from "sun-up to sun-down" for each day of the farm stay. Volunteers will also be required to:
- share their experiences with Farms along the Tour as "part of the heart" of the MO Farm Tour - information sharing!
- document their Tour via a website / weblog - which will serve as a "cross-pollination" farm marketing tool
- bring only two pieces of luggage. No pets. Volunteer references will be verified and provided to Farms upon request.
