How to contact your Missouri legislators

Here is how:

Subject: Bicycle & Pedestrian Day at the Capitol - Please support bicycling, walking, and trails in Missouri

Dear [REPRESENTATIVE or SENATOR]

Bicycle and Pedestrian Day at the Capitol and the annual Legislators Bicycle Ride is April 11th.

[Briefly tell why bicycling, walking, and/or trails are important to you and your community. Ask your rep to carefull read the materials we will drop off on Capitol Day and support legislation and funding for walking, bicycling, and trails.  A personal message is best.]

Representatives of bicycle, pedestrian, and trails groups from across Missouri will be visiting your office today.  Please support our agenda for making Missouri a better, safer place to walk and bicycle:

 * Oppose HB 2047, to allow ATVs on the Katy Trail

 * Oppose HB 2046, to require Missouri bicyclists to carry a 15-foot tall safety flag

 * Support HB 2044, to require a safe distance when passing bicyclists, in no case less than 3 feet

 * Support several bills that ban texting while driving and otherwise discourage distracted driving

 * Support a Missouri transportation funding solution that includes funding for walking, bicycling, and transit. Missouri invests just $0.09 per resident in public transportation.  Missouri invests NO state transportation funding in walking/bicycling. Transportation in Missouri means a lot more than just highways. Support a comprehensive solution to state transportation funding that meets the transportation needs of all Missourians.

[Explain that you live in the Representative's District, tell where you live or any connection you have with the Representative.]

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Your Name

Your contact information

If you would like to mention the key legislative issues for this year, they are summarized here.  (However, with this message it is really more important for you to make a personal connection with your Representative and Senator, and let them know why bicycling/walking/running/trails is important to YOU.  The legislative packet we drop off with them will have all the technical details.)

What are our Capitol Day issues this year?

In brief, our issues this year are:

  • Opposing 15 foot flag requirement for bicyclists
  • Opposing bill to allow ATVs and golf carts on the Katy Trail
  • Opposing a proposed bill to ban bicyclists for many state highways
  • Supporting increased penalties for bad/dangerous drivers who injure or kill
  • Supporting bills to ban texting while driving
  • Supporting a bill to strengthen the Missouri safe passing of bicyclists provision
  • Supporting integrated statewide transportation funding, including funding for walking, bicycling, trails, and public transit along with highway funding

Thank you!

Contacting your elected officials makes a real difference. When we put that together with our other educational and outreach efforts for public officials and the work of our lobbyist in Jefferson City, it really helps.

Thank you!
