Monett becomes 39th Missouri community with a Complete Streets policy
Recently Monett, in southwest Missouri, became Missouri's 39th community to adopt a Complete Streets policy. The Monett Times reported:
The Monett City Council has adopted a resolution endorsing "complete streets" as an outgrowth of the long-range transportation improvement initiative propelled by the Environmental Protection Agency's grant-funded Healthy Places for Healthy People workshop, held in October 2017.
Shaun Hayden and Alex Severs, leaders of the Healthy Schools/Healthy Communities initiative, funded by the Missouri Foundation for Health, presented the city council with the 26-page summary of the workshop. They also presented a three-page resolution for consideration endorsing the concept of complete streets in future city planning. . . .
The resolution detailed how the city incorporated complete streets principles into its long-term transportation plan and supported initiatives such as incorporating pedestrian safety and traffic calming measures in the future.
"Nows therefore be it resolved that all public street projects, both new construction and reconstruction in the City of Monett, shall be designed and constructed using 'Complete Streets' polices where practical," the resolution said.
Continuing, the resolution called for street design accommodating all users of all ages and abilities, recognizing the inter-connected multi-modal network of the street grid to create a comprehensive, integrated network, as well as considering complete street features during design, planning, construction and maintenance operations.
Over 2.7 million Missourians now live in a community that has adopted a Complete Streets policy.
Kudos and many thanks go to Missouri Livable Streets (organized by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services), to the Healthy Schools/Healthy Communities initiative--just one of the initiatives of the Missouri Foundation for Health that has supported active transportation initiatives around Missouri, to the Monett City Council and staff for supporting Complete Streets, and to the citizens of Monett who support this initiative.
