Support the Katy Trail Connection to Kansas City

In just a couple of minutes you can send an email message the judge to approve a proposed agreement between the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and AmerenUE that will allow completion of the Katy Trail, making it a trail cross-state trail system.

The judge allowed 30 days for public comment, ending December 28th, 2007. Citizens have sent 1889 emails so far using this page--we'd like to see 2000 or more comments.

Short messages are very effective--just one sentence is great!

You can delete our suggested message and write one of your own--it is more effective that way.

Please DO be positive, polite, and persuasive. That is what works best . . .

Background

Missouri bicyclists and trail advocates have been working for years to "Complete the Katy Trail" by connecting it from state line to state line--allowing us to ride or walk the trail from Liberty Memorial in Kansas City to the St. Louis Arch.

The biggest missing piece is the connection to Kansas City. AmerenUE owns the Rock Island railroad corridor that connects the Katy to the KC metro area. No trains currently run on the corridor.

Recently a flood caused by failure of a dam owned by Ameren devastated Johnson's Shut-ins State Park.

As compensation for the devastation and to show Ameren's corporate good will, Missouri Governor Blunt, Attorney General Jay Nixon, and Missouri Department of Natural Resources asked Ameren to allow the state use of the Rock Island rail corridor to "Complete the Katy Trail".

The agreement for the Katy Trail connection was included in the proposed settlement for the Taum Sauk disaster.

Now there is a 30-day public comment period on this proposed agreement, ending December 27th, 2007. At the end of that period the judge will either approve the settlement or send it back for further negotiations.

Some opposition to the Katy Trail portion of the agreement has come up. That means that the judge needs to hear from those who support the Katy Trail connection as well.

If we want the Katy to become a cross state trail, this is our chance.
