Listen to 911 tapes as Mayor hits cyclist Randy Murdick then flees the scene

Recently the St Louis Post-Dispatch obtained audio of the 9-1-1 calls immediately following the incident where Sunset HIls Mayor Mark Furrer struck cyclist Randy Murdick, then fled the scene.

In the aftermaht of the incident, local cyclists and advocates have been working with the City of Sunset Hills to encourage the city to take several concrete steps towards becoming a Bicycle Friendly Community.  The City is open to this and progress in discussions has been good.

The Riverfront Times gives this summary of the incident as reported on the 9-1-1 tapes:

In 911 calls made after Sunset Hills mayor Mark Furrer and cyclist Randy Murdick collided last week, Murdick tells dispatchers he was run off the road by a car, and a witness screams at the driver to stop leaving the scene.

The full two-minute audio clip, obtained by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, records two callers, a witness and Murdick himself, describing a hit-and-run.

"I want to report a hit-and-run over here on Old Gravois Road, right here by Delta Dental," the witness tells the 911 dispatcher, later saying, "The guy hit a bicyclist, drove off and then turned around and came back." . . .

 

"Pull over, pull over!" the father can be heard saying. "You just hit that guy and took off!"While the caller is describing the incident, his father is shouting at Furrer in the background, trying to stop him from leaving.

The dispatcher asks for a license plate number for the vehicle but interrupts to demand that the caller's father stop antagonizing the driver. . . .

Hundreds of cyclist turned out to Sunset Hills over the weekend for a solidarity ride through the St. Louis suburb, and some activists held a rally for cyclist safety in front of city hall Monday.
