Local mayors and transportation officials on Friday pleaded with state lawmakers to raise the gas tax by 2 cents before they adjourn May 15, although the measure is probably dead.

State Senate leaders said last week that they were unlikely to debate the issue in the final weeks of the session, and a similar bill Tuesday didn’t get enough votes to pass out of the House Transportation Committee.
