People who like to bicycle for fun, exercise or for commutes in Missouri may not like how the Show-Me State ranked in the September AARP Bulletin, and they’ll like how Kansas turned out even less.

A map from the League of American Bicyclists printed in the magazine showed that Missouri ranked 34th in the nation among bicycle friendly states. Kansas was 48th. The league’s website notes there are five essential elements that earned the states their ranking.

MoBikeFed comment: Missouri has ranked as high as 17th of the 50 states over the past decade. We have continued to move forward in Missouri with some very important improvements to bicycle safety and connectivity.

However, we cannot ignore that other states are moving forward, too--in most cases, they are moving forward faster than we are. Thus, our drop in rankings over the past several years.

It is up to state and local leaders to turn this around. Other states are doing it, and Missouri can and should, too.
