Federal transit authorities want more specifics in plans created by Joplin area transportation planners for projects that will involve state and federal tax dollars.

That was the discussion Thursday among members of the Joplin Area Transportation Study Organization, which is composed of government leaders and planners from the Joplin metropolitan area.

JATSO members represent Joplin, Carl Junction, Webb City, Jasper and Newton counties and the Missouri Department of Transportation, who collaborate on planning that ranges from road and bridge expansion, replacement and repair projects in the area to planning for airports and trolley systems.

In addition, the organization will be doing more work on projects to accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists, Joplin planner Taylor Cunningham said.

MoBikeFed comment: MoBikeFed has been working with Metropolitan Planning Organizations around the state, such as JATSO, to encourage them to include more comprehensive bicycle and pedestrian planning for their regions, and to include important elements such as:

- Complete Streets policies
- Regional bicycle, pedestrian, and trails plans that are actively implemented and updated
- Representation of major groups interested in bicycling, walking, and trails on key MPO committees
- Promotion of Bicycle Friendly and Walk Friendly Community programs within their MPO areas
