Edwards recognized that even though people know exercising 30 minutes a day promotes better health, she liked how GirlTrek sweetened the message. “We sell fun sisterhood, stronger communities and self-care,” she says. “If you are part of a community of consistency, your chance of success in any endeavor increases. When you find a buddy to walk with, you are more likely to stay with the program.”

Edwards is all about networking and making connections. When she discovered Trailnet, an organization that promotes healthy active communities where walking, bicycling and use of public transportation are a way of life, she brought GirlTrek with her. She’s not one to sit on the sidelines. “I got involved, serving on a committee to get black women more interested in riding bikes. I’ve biked St. Louis with Trailnet and trained for long rides. We now have GirlTrek Biking Buddies, but only in St. Louis,” she says.
