A proposed election-year increase in Missouri’s gasoline tax has the backing of Gov. Jay Nixon.

The Democratic chief executive said Monday he favors a plan introduced this month by a Republican senator that would raise the gas tax 1.5 cents per gallon and 3.5 cents for a gallon of diesel.

“We’re going need to start making a down payment on the future transportation needs of the state,” Nixon told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in an interview in his Capitol office. “We’ve stayed away from that problem for a while.”
