MoBikeFed comment: This article has it exactly right: If local citizens and communities embrace the Rock Island Trail and use it to help develop their local economies in a modest and sustainable way, the trail will be a great asset to the area and to rural MissouriIt’s been decades since a train came through town, and yet the town continues to grow, so perhaps the little city is more than just a stop on the line.
The railway, now owned by Ameren Missouri, has sat idle for years. It’s track used for nothing except to catch blowing litter.
Recently, plans have been made to create a biking/hiking trail that would begin in Beaufort and go west to connect with the established Katy Trail.
This proposed trail could bring more growth to the town of Gerald, but Gerald must be proactive in order to capitalize on the plan.
The local Chamber of Commerce is hoping to have a town hall style meeting and invite board members of the Missouri Rock Island Trail group to attend. They will directly address citizens on how the proposed trail will affect their community.
